Questions & Answers
Question : did the weight on 302 flexplates change from 68 to 85?
i put a 302 out of a 85 mercury marque in a 68 mustang with a c4 that had a 289 so i had to buy a flywheel from an early 302 that was the small one and i have a vibration and i think it might be a balance problemive used 289 flywheels on 302's and the other way around and had no problems so im wondering if they changed the weight on the flywheels on the 80's
Answer:
289/302 used 28oz. balancers and flexplates up until early 1981 which they then changed to 50oz.. The 351W used 28oz. throughout production.

Question : How much money would it cost for me to put a carb'd 350 engine in my 1996 Firebird?
The original engine is fuel injected, of course. It is the 3.8L V6. How much would it cost just to rebuild the 3.8 motor to stock specs? How much would it cost instead to replace the V6 with a mild 350 Chevy engine with, say, 300HP?Would I need to remove the gas tank to remove the fuel pump?Would I need to use a different radiator shroud?Would I be able to just bolt on the 350 engine to the stock auto transmission (I believe it is a 4l60E transmission)?Would I need to change flexplates?Would I be able to bolt on any of the accessories from the V6 to the 350, or would I need to purchase all new accessories? By accessories, I mean the PSP, the Alternator, the starter, etc. I know that I would need a new intake, a carb, etc. What about the motor mounts? Would I require new ones? How much would the entire job cost to install the 350 Chevy motor into my Firebird?
Answer:
First of all get the carb thing out of your head. (1) It will make the car worth lees if you try and sell it.(2) Fuel injection is better on gas, has better throttle response, and can be tuned to give better performance than a carb. The 3.8 is a 305 missing two cylinders. Any one piece rear main seal small block will bolt to this transmission. You will need to swap the ECM for the one that goes with the V8, you will need a V8 fans shroud, possibly a bigger radiator investigate your car might already have the bigger one in it. You will need the exhaust manifolds and front section of the exhaust for the V8. As far as the accessories go the power steering pump should bolt on, as the alternator, the brackets should be the same but if not get the ones from a fourth gen V8 Camaro or Firebird.

Question : Flywheel for a 348 BB Chevy in a 1958 Bel-Air?
I am wondering what aftermarket flywheels/flexplates( 396, 454, etc.) will fit a 348 Chevy backed by a Turboglide 2-speed Automatic transmission. Also, if any, where could I buy the flywheel or do I have to use the flywheel of a 348 block only(would prefer to get a brand new type). Thanks in advance for helping this Newbie classic car builder.
Answer:
The 348 and the 409 were similar. the 396 and 454 are different. However, it would be a good idea to get the flywheel made for that specific unit so that the engine balance is mot affected.

Question : what could cause flexplates (fly wheels) to crack (transmissionwise)?
just what i asked lol! its a geometro...(its automatic so its a flexplate)
Answer:
well is it a flexplate or flywheel? it matters, if the flywheel is cracked then you are way too heavy on the clutch and cannot effectively drive a manual transmission, if the flexplate is cracked, it could be a torque converter problem, or even a starter problem

Question : How do you know if your engine/transmission is internally balanced or externally balanced?
I'm looking on Jegs for a flexplate specifically the heavy duty jegs plates so how do I figure out which one I need? Here is a link to the flexplates I'm looking at: http://www.jegs.com/p/JEGS/750886/10002/-1Thank you.
Answer:
Looks like it's for a chevy v8 right? Easy. What engine do you have? The ONLY externally balanced chevy v8's was the 400 small block and the 454 big block. Now the balance is due to the crankshaft so if you have a stroker engine that uses a 400 or 454 crank it will be externally balanced aswell like the 383 strokers, they use a 400 style crank. All the others, 262, 265, 267, 283, 302, 305, 307, 350 small blocks and the 348, 366, 396, 427 big blocks are internally balanced Now for the tooth count, that has to match your starter. If your starter bolts on the nose that holds it to the block are straight across you need the 153 tooth. If your starter bolts are stagered/angled then you need the 168 tooth
