Questions & Answers
Question : Why is my battery dying in my 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
I have a 1995 Jeep grand Cherokee.I have got the battery tested, alternator, both good. I have redid all of the connection on the battyer, starter, alternator, and body and engine ground. The neg battery had a little dust in it but I do not think that is the problem. With the neg cable off the battery I tested the draw with a multimeter and it read 8.70 amps.I started disconnecting the fuses in my fuse block under the hood, and when I pulled the 50 amp fuse block fuse the amps started dropping to about 7.80 and then started leveling off. Then when I take the multimeter off and reconnect it, the amps are back to 8.70. The same thing happens with the I.O.D. 20 amp fuse.My alternator gauge started reading about 12 amps about 3 weeks ago.My car started dying about 2 weeks ago.My ABS light on the dash came on about 2 weeks ago.My alternator is pushing out about 14 amps at the battery. If I turn my car off after driving for 30 minutes it wont start back up right after. If I charge my battery all the way up it will last for like 5 hours with a couple of starts. Please help me, I can not figure it out. I will greatly appreciate itWhat should my next steps be?What are those fuses to?Thanks

Answer:
There is a problem with the charging circuit, somewhere.Have the battery retested.Check all wiring to and from battery and alternator, looking for bad grounds, breaks, bad insulation. If ok, replace the diode pack in the alternator.

Question : cant start engine.?
cant start engine. Here a clicking noise. I have the battery, bttry cranking amp, and the alternator tested and they are good. replaced starter and still have the same problem. pls help

Answer:
What kind of car? It could be the starter solenoid, which is separate from the starter on some cars/trucks. My old Ford Ranger had this setup. I would have thought the battery... Check the connections to the battery and make sure they are tight and if there's any corrosion on the connectors get rid of it with a wire brush. This can cause a high resistance connection. You might also have a problem in the cables, you can check them with an ohmmeter.

Question : Truck for sale.?
1994 chevy z71 single cab. new crate 350 engine and 700r4 transmission. (less than 4000 miles on power train) new radiator, water pump, fuel pump, belts and hoses, starter, alternator, interstate battery, shocks. new sony cd player with auxilery imput jack. polk, pioneer, and sony speakers and 400 watt amp. 6 speaker surround sound. maintenance done on transfer case when engine and tranmission was put in. For information please contact me at hillsidechild@yahoo.com

Answer:
It's still an old truck. The value is subjective. A dealer will give you a grand. A Chevtrucknut a bit more. What's the price? All that money in those upgrades you will never recoup if you sell so might as well keep it.

Question : Could an alternator effect glow plugs heating up enough?
So I have a 1981 Oldsmobile 98 Regency with a 350 v8 Diesel. Since I bought it every morning I have had to use starter fluid in the carb to start it. Well the other day I came outside car was completely dead and replaced battery and next morning dead again. So I got the alternator checked and I am replacing it because it had 0 amps to it. So now I am wondering if a low amp alternator could have been the problem that the glow plugs wouldn't warm up enough to start the car without starter fluid.

Question : My alternator is draining my battery when the car is off.?
I have a custom built 240 amp alternator and it drains my battery after a few hours. It took me a week to find out that it was the alternator doing it, I did not know this could happen. I have a 1992 Buick Roadmaster. Now I took the alternator back to the shop that built it and he tested it and said it was good. Now I put it to my own personal test and I know it’s bad. What I want to know is how I should prove to the guys at the shop that it is bad. I have four wires going to my battery on the hot side, the wire from the alternator, starter, the sound system and the one that powers all the things in the car. So I tested each wire one at a time to see where the drain is coming from over a 2 hour time period. And the only one that causes a drain is the alternator wire. But the guy at the shop says it test good. So how can I prove this to him? Aside from that it works perfect, charges well and put out the correct amount of volts.

Answer:
use some Ohm-meter or digital multimeter and measure DC resistance of it. If it has lower than 500-1000Ohm, it is gonna drain your battery after time.

Question : Help! 1987 chevy suburban 1/2 ton not charging battery. New alternator, Battery, checked grounnds.?
Hello everyone, I ve been plagued with the problem of my alternator giving only about 11.6 volts when truck is on. Its a new 105 amp alternator i changed my negative battery wire to ground. I repaired a bad wire to the starter and the car doesnt drain the battery when sitting. I think its not the original motor b/c its carbuerated, maybe a 1986 engine im guessing? do older sub. engines have voltage regulators? please help. Im looking for inlines fuses in the harness to the alternator. Ive tried almost everything i can think of. Your input will be greatly appreciated.

Answer:
You should consider pulling the alternator and having the parts store test it. Even if it is new (assuming a reman) they don't always come out 100%. The voltage regulator setup is determined more by the vehicle, not the engine. Even swapping to an older engine (though it may not be an older motor, the previous owner may have just gutted the fuel injection system on it because they didn't understand it/had problems with it and it was easier for them to throw a carb on it...that would be the most likely scenario in my opinion). That vehicle will have an internally regulated alternator. At 11.6v, it sounds like to me it is not charging at all. It should be 14.5v at charge.

Question : Is my Alternator screwed??? Battery at 12.3 V - Rated at 410 A. Alternator is at 10.9 V, 0.0 Amps?
Yeah....I did a test at Advanced Auto..This is the piece of paper they gave me:====RESULTS====GOOD - RECHARGEVOLTAGE: 12.31VMEASURED: 381 A(SAE)RATED: 410 A(SAE)TEMPERATURE: 79 DEGREESSTARTER TEST RESULTSVOLTAGE: 10.91VAMPS: 0.0ATIME: 1.65SCHARGING EYETEM TEST=====RESULTS===== NO VOLTAGENO LOAD NO LOAD 12.22V 12.22V --.--A --.--A_________________________MAX |_____________________ |MIN |================== NO LOAD LOADED0.24V |_ |RIPPLE________________ 0mV -0.24-Any ideas? Or is it screwed. It doesn't really matter, but before I install a new one that I just got, tell me if the "World Wide" 70 Amp alternator is good, or a bad brand. THANKS!!

Answer:
Suggest if the engine was running at the time the alternator is not producing.

Question : whats the best way to put a sound system in a golf cart?
now im gonna buy the amp for pretty cheap it wont be puttin out to many amps and im gonna get some subwoofers and speakers to hook up to the amp i will just use a ipod to plug into the amp so there wont be a deck but it only has a starter generator in it instead of a real alternator what would you suggest doing should i put in an alternator with another battery or is there a better wayi dont use this golf cart for golfing

Answer:
I know a guy who just did this, actually.Be careful about hooking the stuff to the batteries. I can't remember how, but if you do it wrong the batteries will get 32volts instead of 12.*Make sure you know before hooking up equipment to it, you don't want your only stuff getting fried, do you?Good Luck and Party On!

Question : 2004 Saturn L300 Starting/Battery Problems?
I left my iPOD charger/FM transmitter plugged into the cig lighter for about 10min while the car was turned off, came back out and the car wouldnt start. Took it to the mechanic, battery, alternator and started tested OK. Used the iPOD charger again yesterday, unplugged it b-4 turning the car off, came back out 10-15 min later, would not start. Took it to Advanced Auto Parts for testing, all results OK but it said that the "Starter AMP draw is low w/ OK starter voltage. Check starter circuit for loose worn or corroded wiring". My cig lighter is "testy" and if you bump whatever is plugged into it, it comes unplugged a little and shuts off whatever is charging, could this cause a short in the electrical to cause these problems???

Answer:
It is possible that IPOD is not problem! It is also possible that charging system is good! But several problems are possible here!First of all though problematic, I don't think lighter socket is bad! If it was shorting, - it would cause a fuse to blow, or a wire to burn off, -- in either case, next time you tried to use it --- it would be dead! Now the "low starter amp" is possibly stated wrong here! Did they say that the amp availability for starter was low?? If batery can not supply enough amps (and is proper size battery to begin with)-- IE you have a 550 amp battery, but it is only putting out 300 amps! Then you battery is getting in critical condition! And possibly the 15 minutes of draw from lighter socket might put it low enough that it can't crank engine anymore! If so, then you will get the same effect from leaving key on , leaving headlights on- quick discharge- (if they will stay on with key off)- or even leaving doors open so courtesy lights run (but will take a little longer, as they don't draw much)!Bad connection problems generally show up in different ways, - but nothing is impossible, - so I would pull off battery connectors, and soak each one "underwater" in a cup of water with baking soda in it (about a teaspoon full), as long as water bubbles, there is corrosion (oxidation) on terminals, when water remains non bubbly for about 30 seconds or so terminal in now clean! Acid from battery contacting copper wires etc causes greenish fuzzy stuff, -- this makes for bad connections! Now they should have done a AMP test on battery when checking system, as well as output voltage/current test on alternator! You can get this done at AutoZone and lots of auto parts supply stores, as well as WalMart. Be aware though that they might want to sell you a battery, (as that is what they do for a living), - if in doubt get it checked in several places, for "second opinions"-- Most do it for free!

Question : how much do you think this car is worth?
1994 Buick Lesabre Limited.New valve covers, alternator, starter, spark plugs & wires, 2 new front tires (back are still new), thermosat, headlights & bulbs and a new battery. The a/c is ice cold and the heat works mint. Also with passenger climate control. The interior is like new and with power everything. 2 owners and it has 115k miles. also comes with a car system that has :16 speakers all together in the car.four 10" ev's that are built into the back dash.2 bullet tweeters 6 surround sound tweeters two 12" dual voice coil pioneer premier speakers 2 midrange adibahn door speakersThere is a 200 watt alpine cd player with a removable face. For the amps there is 1000 watt monoblock memphis audio amp 1000 watt performance technique 4 channel amp.well i was more of thinking to buy the car. i want a car with a system. would it be better to buy the car and all the speakers and get them installed myself?

Answer:
Sorry, system doesn't count. Sell the stereo or sell the car. The car: check out KBB.com. Add on what you think to that for the system. You will not get everything back.
