Questions & Answers
Question : Hyundai Accent Wheel Cylinder Change?
i have a hydundai Accent 2003 and mileage 55k on it. Since lst week break hav become tough n requires hard pedal to apply, when i took to Tires Plus they recommend to replace the wheel cylinder and brake system flush which costs 330, will i get it done some where else at low cost? Advice plz
Answer:
The wheel cylinders, if indeed leaking, are covered under the 5 year/ 60,000 mile warranty (even if you're the 10th owner). A dealer, using your VIN, can determine the 'warranty start date' of your vehicle. If you are beyond the 5 year mark, new cylinders from Hyundai do run about $30.00 each. The shop of course, has to buy them from someone, then they in turn mark up the price to make a small profit for themselves. This is normal and expected. You shouldn't need to flush the system unless it has been 'opened' many times and is contaminated. Brake fluid is a clear amber-tinted color. Ask them why they recommend changing it if there is no contamination. If price is a concern, have them print you a quote and take it around to a few other shops, see if any will beat it. Make sure you get some kind of warranty or guarantee on parts and labor. Hyundai warranties their parts and labor for 1year/ 12,000 miles.

Question : Bleeding VW brake system?
After replacing the front wheel brake cylinders and have attempted to bleed the front brakes, there is no brake pressure. If I bleed all four brakes will that fix it, or is there something else I need to do.It is a '72 Volkswagen Beetle
Answer:
Be a good idea to adjust the brakes on all 4 wheels prior to bleeding. After bleeding the back if you still can't get pressure your master cylinder must be bad. Don't rebuild it ,buy a new or rebuilt. I've seen many a V.W. with decent brakes in warm weather but when it got cold the master cylinder wouldn't hold pressure.Jim

I have a 99 ford ranger 4x4 w/ abs.. The brake peddle goes to the floor. AFTER this started happening I went ahead and changed the brakes wheel cylinders calipers drums and rotors all the way around, and bled the system throughly there is no air in the system anywhere and the back brakes are adjusted correctly, tight but not too tight. With out the engine running the brakes feel great, but as soon as you start it up the feel like crap and go to the floor. Like I said this started befor I did anything to the brakes, could this be the abs system?? andy ideas would be appreciated thanx

Question : I need a brake repair quote... any mechanics out there?
I've had it repaired, i would like to know if i paid too much! I parked on some crusty snow, and it managed to rupture a rear brake line. The mechanic told me, he would patch the line, but it was close to a couple of brake proportioners, that would also have to be replaced. These proportioners were on the line, not near the master cylinder. I was also told that in order to bleed the brake system, i would have to replace the rear brake valves. I did look at the brake lines, they were very rusty, the bleeder screws on the valves were also rusty. I'm not necessarily questioning the parts that he replaced, but i would like to know if i got a fair price, i will post what i paid, when i pick the "best answer". 1995 oldsmobile 88.- replace rear brake line & 2 rear brake proportioners- replace rear wheel cylinders- and brake fluid, how much, including labour, is this job worth? thanx for your answers.
Answer:
you were probably lucky to get out of there without spending $500.00. it sounds to me like the mechanic was on the up and up though..ie.. nothing unnecessary... that was pretty extensive..the parts were probably not the expensive part... i would guess depending on the length of the line.. brake line-$8.00.....brake proportioners- $12-$15 each..... wheel cyclinders-$20-$30 a piece... but the labor cost can rough you up a little bit with a 4-hour minimum at about $50 - $ 75 an hour...depending on if you took it to a specialist... hope you got a good deal... sounds like you are holding on to a sweet ride for as long as possible

Question : Am i the only idiot who put transmission fluid in the brake line?
Back in the summer i accidently put transmission fluid in the brake fluid resevoir, and now it is costing me 875 bucks to replace the whole brake system...brakes ,calipers, master cylinder, cuttin rotors, fluids, calipers, rear wheel cylinders, etc. as of now no lines need to be replaced... this was a 900 dollar mistake that was my own fault. had i known the damage it would cause i would have had it checked right away.
Answer:
Mistakes happen....But I'm not sure why all these people are telling you to just refill the systme with brake fluid and it will be fine. If you had done this right away then they would be right and you would only be paying a $100 bucks but since it has been in the system for as long as it has it probably has soaked into all the rubber bits which swells them making them useless so yes you should rplace all of them. people stop spreading misinformation.

Question : I have bled the brake lines, replaced wheel cylinders, master cylinder, and booster but still air in system?
84 Trans Am, 4 wheel discsi have also gravity bled the lines too, it got a little better, but it still sounds like air is in the system...
Answer:
I hope you bench-bled the master cylinder before you installed it, and checked all the flex lines to make sure they're not bulging. If you have properly bled the M/C and the flex lines are all right, there's a two-person bleeding procedure that works really well to force air out of non-ABS brake systems. If it's necessary, be sure you have the proportioning valve hold-off tool GM makes for their brakes systems. Install that in the proper place on the master cylinder to make sure the valve doesn't close. If it does, you have to switch to the other brake circuit and start the bleeding procedure over again.Once the proportioning valve is open, have someone pump the brake pedal 4-5 times and hold it down while you crack the bleeder valve. Wait until the fluid runs steady, then close the valve and have the person in the car slowly release the pedal and repeat. Do this for however long it takes to bleed the air from that caliper. I'm assuming you're doing this right, by having a full container of just-unsealed brake fluid in the reservoir for the brake circuit you're bleeding and *bleeding the calipers in the proper order*. If you don't follow the order specified in the repair manual, you aren't properly bleeding the brake circuits and you'll have trapped air. After you've bled with the forced method, you can finish up with gravity bleeding again. It will probably take you a while to get the air out this way, but it's the most thorough procedure.Remember: Never use brake fluid in plastic containers or any kind that's been opened previously, because DOT 3 and 4 are hygroscopic and absorb water for however long their container has been unsealed. Your problem may be "wet" brake fluid.Good luck!

Question : Knocking sound at the right rear side of my car, what can it be?
I just recently went to Sears and got my rear brake calibers(wheel cylinders) replaced. The guy checked my full brake system and said everything was good with the car. I have a 91 Chevy beretta, I have been hear this knocking sound at the right rear side in the back of the car, it isnt anything in the trunk, I screwed the jack and spare tire down good and the trunk is empty, it sounds like something in the trunk or on the rear right wheel knocking, my dad said it might be the shocks or the springs that are loose or need replacing, it also sounds as if something is loose. It only knocks when I accelerate but doesnt when the car is stopped. The guy at sears also raised the car and looked under it and he said if it was the shocks they would be leaking, and the car is sitting high up in the back so it dont seem to be the shocks, the mechanic also said they look brand new(the shocks) Can it be something loose, or what can it be?
Answer:
Inspect the shock bushings, not the cylinder. Also the suspension bushings.

Question : 1996 toyota camry having problems with brake system?
Brake system refinished, new pads, shoes, wheel cylinders, and brake system flushed pedal is not firm it goes down about 1/2 before the car starts to brake feels spongey but if pump 2 -3 times is firm and brakes instantly how do i get it to brake like that with out the pumping?
Answer:
sounds like they didn't bleed the system while they refilled it...I'd go back and tell them to do it correctly...(air in the lines...)
