Questions & Answers
Question : Is replacing the Power Steering High Pressure hose very difficult?
I know my way around cars a bit (brakes, brake lines, car stereo's, etc) and I have helped replace ball joints, tie rod ends, etc with my mechanic friends so I am not a complete dummy. I have a 2005 Ford F150 5.4 liter that needs to have the Power Steering High Pressure hose replaced (verified at the mechanic shop). The hose runs me around $200-$225 and labour with out the whole job at around $500. They say they will have to remove the oil filter to do the job so they are including a new oil filter, oil and of course power steering fluid in the price. Do I need any special tools? Anything to be aware of? Suck it up and pay the cash? I live a new place so I don't have any of my mechanic friends to lean on (wow, you really miss those helpful mechanic friends) so I will have to do everything. It looks easy enough but I know that looks can be deceiving. I do own the Haynes repair manual! :) Thanks in advancethe leak is where the hose is crimped and goes into the power steering fluid cooler

Question : How badly did I get ripped off?
I left my car in my garage for 5 years without using it. I took it to the mechanic today to get it running again. He charged me $700 for cleaning out the gas tank, replacing the feul pump (with a generic pump, not the name brand pump), cleaning out the fuel lines, and replacing the battery. Also, I will be going tomorrow to another mechanic and spending $300 to replace all the fluids in the car (a 30k which includes coolant, transmission fluid, brake fluid, power steering fluid, oil and the filters). Should I get the fluids changed for this price? The car (Nissan Quest mini van) was in perfect condition when I parked it.It is a 97 Nissan Quest.Mileage on car is 58,000
Answer:
there wasn't any reason to replace the fuel pump. If you had put a gasoline additive in to keep the gas at a stable set, everything would've been fine.Sounds like the guy did good work, but I would question the fuel pump, unless it was very gummed up, some Seafoam or TEchron would've fixed that though.Next time, sell the car, it's not worth storing it for 5 years, a lot of things can go wrong due to it not being driven... engine oil seals, transmission seals, rust where there shouldn't be..

Question : Lubrication of steering system on 99 Ford Taurus....power steering filter?
I can not find any grease zerts on any of my suspension/steering components on my 99 Ford Taurus. Also where would the power steering filter be? My manual says in the return line....but I have not found yet and Parts source does not list one. My Haynes manual does not show any zert locations either. Nothing on ball joints/tie rods/etc. Is this accurate? My steering is super stiff. Basically no assist. I have changed the pump. I did not change any hoses or flush the system. I did my best to bleed the system as per my manual. Once in a while I find that while I am parked and I turn the wheel slowly it has some assist. Not noticeable while driving though.Going for another test drive now to verify a few thing.
Answer:
Welcome to Ford parts. The standard Ford tie-rod ends have no grease fittings. Replacement Moog, TRW and Spicer rod ends DO have grease fittings. Mke sure your replacements have grease fittings on them. There is a power steering filter inside the fill reservoir. Try having your power-steering system completely flushed at a dealership or by a private mechanic. Do not trust the "fast oil change places" with this service. If the flush does not fix the problen you're looking at a re-manufactured power steering rack. They are a bit*ch to change in a Sable or Taurus.

Question : 1998 Toyota Camry power steering reservoir.?
Hi, I've had my Camry for the past 3 years and it has been running great. I change the oil/filter every 3000 mi, and I have changed the automatic transmission fluid once since I got it. I check and replenish fluids in the engine often to make sure the car stays in shape. I pulled into town the other day from a 2 hour drive and noticed a squeaking sound coming from the engine - this would happen as I made left and right hand turns. Upon closer inspection I noticed that the power steering fluid had gone down significantly. I checked the reservoir for leaks, looked at the hoses but have yet to get under the car for a more thorough check. I did put a cardboard box under the car to see if any fluid drops on the ground, but there was nothing there. When filling the power steering fluid on a 1998 Camry, which line do you consider the fill line? The one that has 'Min' at one end and 'Max' at the other end?I have a 3yr old Dexron3 ATF. Can I still use it, or do I have to buy a new one?

Question : Can someone help me diagnose problem with 1986 Buick Century?
Here is the problem with the car. The 1986 Buick century 4 door sedan is in pretty good shape. Recently, when I stopped at a stop light, there would be like a rough idle and RPM surge then it would "gag" like for air and then conk out. This was dangerous, because then there were no brakes or power steering. It was checked for vaccum leaks. Some theories are bad fuel pump/filter, the heat wave everyone is having, clogged fuel line, etc. The car is fuel injection. I cannot risk driving the car and may have to have it towed. All I am trying to find out if somebody might have a hunch what to look for and how to fix the problem. Thanks for your time and don't be afraid to offer your opinions, all are welcome.
Answer:
a rough idle is an indication the computer didn't like something then it tried to fix it by reving the engine i would have the mass air flow sensor and the o2 sensors checked before doing anything else. did your check engine light come on or do you have any light on your dash flashing. if its just an engine light have a shop read it for free most in my area will do that. if there is a light flashing count the flashes till there is a pause the light flashes are usually 3 digit # and will flash all codes till it repeats it twice so watch closely

By the size of your carb I'm guessing the engine probably has stock heads and maybe a mild aftermarket cam.If it's 100% rust free and the paint all matches, shines ect.Interior is in good condition and the car runs and drives good I'd start at $3500-$4000 and accept offers.Another good idea is to check ebay or if your not already a member, join www.thirdgen.org they will help you with anything, pretty nice guys over there.Hope it helps.

Question : I have a 96 mecury sable and the power steering line on the bottom of the car keeps braking and stop it?
the line that goes from the steering rack, to the oil cooler, has a filter on it. and it keep blowing up the filter, so i went to just a straight line, and the line broke, so i pumped out all the fluid, and put in all new fluid. start the car, let all the line fill up, shut the car off, let it sit until next morning, started car, and the broke again, can someone help
Answer:
The relief valve on the power steering pump is plugged. you need a new PS pump. Also never turn the steering wheel to full lock. you get the same amount of steer even when you stop right before you peg the steering wheel all the way to the left or right. This also causes damage.

Question : Leaking Power Steering (Ford Expedition)?
Hey I have a Ford Expedition and the power steering is leaking. It is coming out of what seems to be a sensor, not the to/return lines. I have two questions: 1) What is this sensor/gauge called 2) Can it be fixed with hand tools in the engine compartment, or do you have to pull the shroud, belt, pump, etc off. Looks like I can possibly take the oil filter off and get to it through the back, but I never worked on a power steering pump before. Thanks in advanced. Thanks a lot, I'll give it a shot!
Answer:
It is called the power steering pressure sensor. It does just what the name implies, senses pressure in the power steering line. That info is then sent to the main computer, and it adjusts stuff as it feels the need!It unscrews with a wrench, and has an electrical connector on it. It is easy to replace. You only have to remove stuff to gain access. If you can reach it as is, go for it!
