Questions & Answers
Question : 95 Toyota Previa burning catalytic converter Gaskets?
I had a leak, changed the flex/cat converter, sounded fine. Then I lost power, so I needed a full tune up...did a FULL tune up, fuel filters PVC air and oil filters new wires and plugs and even the 02 sensors for the cat, everything was fine THEN my defog and heat would make the car lose power and the rear defog wouldn't work and I burned the Cat gaskets and I have a leak AGAIN???? WHAT is going on this is all in the matter of 2 months...??? I think my Cat is burned and the gaskets are burned as well? WHAT IS GOING ON?
Answer:
did you put a factory Catalyst/flex pipe assembly on. It is unlike the factory setup with the good flanges to develop a leak again but have seen problems with the aftermarket stuff. If the engine was missing, that could cause the converter to overheat and burn out, but you should have had a noticeable shake in the engine (miss). The exhaust leak should be easy to find with a stethescope or rubber hose held next to your ear-move the tube around and the closer you get to the leak- the louder it will sound in your ear. The defog/heat issue needs more info. Could be a charging issue if the added voltage draw is making the vehicle discharge if my understanding of your notes is accurate. If the charge voltage drops below 9v (needs 13.25-14.5v) the engine will cutout and die. Sounds like numerous problems and needs more investigation. Take it to a good Toyota shop cuz throwing more parts at it may be wasted money. Good Luck-- SB

Question : Some one stole my catalytic converter off my 2003 toyota tacoma, it is bolted in, what all do i need to buy?
and can i replace it myself? I noticed the gaskets and the bolts on the ground, also i need to know if they took the whole unit does that mean my o2 sensor is gone as well?
Answer:
should be just the converter and maybe the bracket front and back if they had stolen that as well.you would have to check on the o2 sensor

Question : Looking to buy a catalytic converter from a reputable dealer for a Saturn Vue 2003, 3.0.?
The left bank converter and both gaskets
Answer:
You can always go to the Saturn dealer but you will pay a lot more than you need to. Your other option is to find a muffler shop. They have good after market catalytic converters that do a great job and are much cheaper.

Question : Question concerning replacing an 02 ford focus catalytic converter?
This is the first time I've replaced this converter. The new converter (which is a direct fit replacement) came with new gaskets, but NOT new mounting bolts, is it OK to reuse the original bolts as long as they're in good shape?
Answer:
Perfectly ok

Question : Buick v6 Series II Engine - catalytic converter related?
Situation:The Service engine light and Low coolant lights come on simultaneously. I Pull into my parent’s house for coolant, notice a funny noise and an odd smell. Get my father and the Noise is actually something causing the engine to bobble the rpm’s between 500-750.The smell turns into smoke (oil). I just switched the oil over to synthetic GTX with an STP Filter, 2000 miles ago. I pull out to get to go to a parts store to get the computer read and noticed a puddle of water, melted ice and snow on the driveway from the catalytic converter! we quickly pull the car into the garage onto ramps and drill two 1" holes to realize it was clogged. Its odd that the converter clogged so abruptly, the engine failed and now the engine will not turn over. We pulled spark plugs 1,3, and 5. 1 & 5 had oil on them, I put in three new plugs to test the engine before hand I cranked the engine forward 30-40 degrees. I started the engine and it only turned over 1 time and then heard a loud collision. MY QUESTION Finally:Could the clogged catalytic converter cause back pressure in 15 minutes to blow the head gasket to allow oil into the pistons and creating a hydraulic cylinder and won’t let the engine combust?Any other comments/suggestions?? All would be appreciated thanks!

Question : service engine light blinks... catalytic converter being affected ?
2002 Cadillac Deville 125,000 milesTo make a long story short... had head gasket leak coolant into combustion chamber. LOTS of steam coming out the exhaust and bubbles comes out of reservoir. Could EASILY smell coolant in exhaust.Did this for about 3 days (maybe 400 miles) before I figured it out. Engine would run rough when first started but runs smooth after about 10 seconds.Had new engine put in and it is fine for 3 days. Now after I am on the highway for about 1/2 hour, the "service engine" light blinks for about 5 seconds, then it stops ( does not stay on). This happens about once each way to work and home but always after about 1/2 hour.I read up on this and it says something about catalytic converter is being affected when the light flashes. What I am wondering is it possible all the coolant that was leaking into the combustion chamber went into the exhaust and could have clogged or coated up the oxygen sensor ? OR that the coolant could have coated the catalytic converter? And I can just keep driving and it will eventually all burn off or should I have it checked out ?
Answer:
The "Sevice Engine" light is for routine maintenance. If you have your owners manual, there is a reset procedure detailed in it.The "Check Engine" light or "CEL" is the one that would light up for O2 sensor or Cat problems. When this light comes on, the best thing to do is stop by an auto parts store and ask them to scan the computer to see what code is set. Even though the CEL only flashes, it still sets a code.Once you have the code, we can help you more.

Question : Can a bad catalytic converter make my engine light come on and off?
Other than bad catalytic converter, the car is in top condition. Head gasket etc all replaced.I've just had head gasket replaced and all the parts associated with it. Another thing that could be helpful is that my car does not idle at the right revs. it's either too high, or too low.
Answer:
The computer flashes the light on and off (not a steady on light) when the engine is dumping unburned fuel into the catalytic converter which will ultimately burn it out due to the high combustion temperatures caused by the unburned fuel. See the details in the technical note below. The engine problem must be fixed when a bad catalytic converter is replaced.http://www.samarins.com/diagnose/checkengine.htmlhttp://www.troublecodes.net/articles/myth- conception.shtmlhttp://www.mobil1.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Car_Care/DIY/Fixing_Your_Check_Engine_Lig ht.aspx?pg=1

Question : Do I have a blown head gasket or a bad catalytic converter?
I have a 1997 Ford Probe, automatic, 4-cylinder.The other day I was driving it and it started to shake really badly and a flashing check engine light came on! I took it in to my mechanic on Monday (it is now Wednesday) and he immediately said that he thought my catalytic converter was bad, that he was 80% sure it was that; I left the car with him for a couple of days so he could do more testing before he did any drastic work on it. So today (Wednesday) he called and said that the car was driving normally now, without him doing any work! So I went and picked the car up and drove it to my house, about 4 miles from the shop, without any problems. So here's where the problem occurred...AGAIN!!! About 6 or 7 hours later, I went out to leave, and the problem popped right back up! I'm wondering if I may have, either a bad catalytic converter, or possibly a blown head gasket??? I'm not the most car savvy guy there is, but the research I've done points to either of these mostly. If not either of these, what other problem might it be? HELP!!!!Thanks for the help, guys! To answer some of YOUR questions:1. Codes? I don't remember exactly what the number were offhand, but it was a misfiring code, in cylinder #2 if I'm not mistaken.2. Engine running like crap? YEAH!!! The car feels like it will stall out as soon as I'm at a dead stop! It shakes TERRIBLY-my muffler looks as if it's about to fall off it's shaking so badly!!!3. Overheating? Nope. All gauges are reading normally. Thanks y'all for all of the previous and future help!!!
Answer:
It might help if you listed the research that you have done. Nothing you posted leads me to believe that anything is wrong with your head gasket or catalytic converter.
