Questions & Answers
Question : 99 Yukon SLT Blown Manifold Gasket, Bad Fuel Pump?
Just bought a 99 Yukon SLT with 89,000 miles on it. The truck, including the engine is immaculate with no leaks, and very little rust. It has the 5.7L Vortec engine ("R" vin id). After 8 days of ownership, it ran hot and when I checked the coolant, it was 1 gallon low. Over the next 3 days, I had to add another gallon. There were no external leaks, and only after adding the 2nd gallon, did I discover the engine oil was overfilled and contaminated with coolant. There was never any white smoke from the tailpipe. The dealership, after towing the truck in, told me the problem was an bad intake manifold gasket. I thought the trouble was a cracked block. Could the dealership be pulling a fast one, to save the expense of an engine rebuild or prevent having to cancel the sales contract? Also, there is a loud, high-pitched whine coming from underneath the truck. This sound comes on everytime the ignition is on. I believe it is the fuel pump but shouldn't be as loud as it is. Should it?

Answer:
Yes you have a bad intake manifold gasket I just did the same repair on a customers car last week, have the repair done do not drive the vehicle with water in the crankcase it will destroy the bearings, the whine is the fuel pump although how loud it is could be personal perception have them check it but they do make an audible noise when energized.

Question : Can I remove 1989 Ford F-150 front fuel tank and run on rear only?
My long wheelbase 1989 Ford F-150 appears to be leaking fuel at the top of the front fuel tank. There's plenty of fuel pressure, so I think the fuel pumps are all good and maybe the only problem is a bad gasket, fuel line, or fuel line connection. Can I remove the front tank, plug its fuel line, and then run on the rear tank only? A Ford dealership service guy told me he's not sure, but that maybe the rear tank pumps first to the front tank, which means I'd have to make a new fuel line connection to the rear tank and maybe get a higher pressure pump for the rear tank. Before I drop the front tank and have to use my bike, anybody know what's what and what to do? This side of mechanicsville, that is! Thanks!

Answer:
yes you can run on rear tank only. but i would not drop the front tank. i would find the leak, and repair it. that will be less work and less costs in the long run. from experience in owning ford trucks with duel tanks for over 30years.

Question : What is the minimum voltage required for fuel pump...?
or ecm etc. for a 94 S-10 Blazer w/ 4.3L Vortec V-6? I noticed that with radio,A/C and headlights on, electronic gauge drops to 11.5-12 volts and engine stalls....starts right back up and only shuts off after voltage drops..engine idles indefinately when gauge reads 13-14 volts. Have been trying to pinpoint cause of intermittent stalling. Checked fuel pump electrical connectors and grounds...look o.k. I hear the pump turn on when key is first turned. EGR with screen gasket is 2 months old car has been running since they were replaced until last week. Could the voltage drop cause the stalling and if so, is the regulator most likely problem?engine runs fine...just stalls intermittently, and I noticed the voltage drops just prior to engine stalling.

Answer:
Whenever the voltage drops below 12.6 V on a computer controlled system, there is a chance the engine will stall. Your voltage on that particular vehicle should NEVER go below 12.6 V unless there is a problem with the charging system, or the engine idle is too low. (With port fuel systems, there are many things that could cause low idle- Best to have a professional check that out.) Otherwise, you are likely looking at replacing the alternator. The voltage regulator usually is INSIDE the alternator, or put on the outside REALLY well, to keep non-mechanics from working on them. You can do alot of damage to the system if you do not install an alternator or voltage regulator properly. If you have never done it before, take it to a professional you trust to make the proper diagnosis and repair. The fuel pump circuit goes to a relay, and the voltage is usually 9V-12.6V- But, I don't think that is your problem.

Question : Leak at fuel pump - 87 Toyota pickup?
I've got a slow leak that needs to be fixed before I get a smog test. It's coming from the underside of the place where the fuel pump bolts onto the engine block - here's a picture:http://picasaweb.google.com/shamsuddinfamily/MiscPics/photo#5197298938628465858As you can see it currently has a thick rubber gasket, which I assume is the problem. The car starts and runs fine. The online parts I've seen give me several options. So here's my question. Should I:A. Just replace the rubber gasket with a new oneB. Use a metal spacer with traditional thin gasketsC. Replace the whole fuel pump (about $50)Actually, I had a friend look at it, and it's motor oil that's leaking out, not fuel, so it's probably just the gasket that's bad, right?

Answer:
There is a diaphram of sorts or a piston of sorts in the older mechanical fuel pumps that will eventually wear out and leak out of the small weep hole in the pump body. Need to replace the whole pump. The gasket comes with it and is all done at the same time.Good Luck.

Question : how do i identify which relay belongs to the fuel pump? 1989 Buick electra/park avenue?
I am trying to replace my intake manifold gasket, I seem to have gotten the basics on that, i am having problems locating my fuel pump relay to i can relieve the system first. i only have (as far as i know) to places for fuses- the one on driver side inside the car my headlight switch and the one close to firewall under the hood. there are 3 relay type boxes, i red one--battery two black ones---??? can i disconnect both

Answer:
Yes you can remove both the relays at the firewall. Also there is an access port for testing pressure there on the larger fuel line, looks sort of like a metal valve stem. If you decide to bleed off the pressure at the test port, use a medium point #2 Phillips driver, or small Torx driver to press the valve open-get your tool lined up, but don't push in before you put a rag over the whole deal. There is a lot of pressure in there, but you will not drain much fuel doing it that way.

Question : 83 chevy pickup. Need a substitute for gasket sealer for mechanical fuel pump (details inside)?
I have an 83 chevy pickup (c10, V8). The mechanical fuel pump has begun leaking. I have a new fuel pump and new gasket I can put on it, but nothing to put on the gasket. This truck is my transportation, friends and relatives live far away from my current location, and it is 10 miles to the nearest bus stop. In other words, I have no way to get to the store, and there is no one to take me. If I was a guy, I'd try hitch hiking. But I'm not, so I won't.Question: can motor oil be used on the gasket? how about vaseline? any other common household substance? I have nothing with silicon in it, except for some all purpose silicon sealant, the stuff that is usually used for bathrooms and kitchens, and takes 24 hours to dry. Hi Adam. The instructions in the repair manual at autozone say to use sealer.

Answer:
Just make sure the surface where the gasket goes is clean and oil free. The gasket will seal just fine unless you have some gouges in the mating surfaces.

Question : Do i need a new fuel pump????
My car started to struggle accelerating around the time my exhaust needed changing. I had a new exhaust on my car (2000 fiat bravo 1.2 16v) but it had to be ripped out as it was faulty and was causing me problems with accelerating e.g. when i was in 1st gear and got to about 10mph it was like the car was being blown back then it suddenly got a push forward and the process kept repeating the faster i went. At about 40mph+ if there were no stops or slowing down it would not jerk but the acceleration was really bad e.g. it would take me about 15-20seconds to reach 25/30mph. I have just had the exhaust replaced and the same thing is happening. I am soooooo confused! i read up on it and im hearing fuel pump/gear box/head gasket(which i have just had a brand new one and the engine skimmed)and loads more things i cant remember but what is it???? Thankyou to anyone who took the time to read this im going insane with the problem!!!!!!!!!

Answer:
"NO" you do not need a fuel pump. Fuel pumps will not give you a hard time they just go out and leave you stranded no if's and's or but's. Be sure that your mechanic changed your catalytic converter because it sounds like it is plugged up. If he changed it then next thing to change is your fuel filter, after that if you still have the problem you will need to take it to the dealer because at this time you may have a problem with a censor that is reading a bad air and fuel mixture. Oh also you may have bad fuel, perhaps water.

Question : 1966 Mustang 289 Fuel pump leak?
Hello i have a question about a fuel pump leak in my 1966 mustang. The fuel pump that it has is the non canister type so it doesnt have a canister on it. Does anybody know where it could be leaking from? I checked it the other day and it is not leaking from the two fuel lines or the gasket that goes between the engine and the pump. Maybe there is a seal on the fuel pump or something nut I dont know. Anybody have any ideas of where the leak is coming from? Thanks

Answer:
Most fuel pumps have a "weep" hole to the outside of the pump to drain fuel when the internal pump diaphragm starts leaking. This makes the fuel less likely to drain into the crankcase and ruin your oil (and your engine!). If there is fuel leaking to the outside of the pump, and it is not coming from the fuel lines, then the fuel pump should be replaced.

Question : 74 VW Bug, Installing Fuel Pump?
Hello everyone, i recently bought a used Volkswagon Bug (74) the fuel pump gasket is leaking, i want to install a new gasket, and need to know how to tighten the back bolt, all help and comments are appreciated, thanks in advanced for any help given.
