Question : What are the best Head Gaskets to put on a '94 Mustang 3.8l?
They have already blown on me twice and I am looking for anything I can do to ensure it does not happen again. I have heard many suggestions like new head bolts or copper gaskets, but I have no way of knowing what is the best. Does anyone with experience in this area have any helpful tips like which brand of gaskets to buy, or can you recommend a website to help me. Thank you very much.

Answer:
The Fel-Pro gaskets are pretty much the standard. If you've had two blown head gaskets it would lead me to think that something was done wrong or something that needed to be done wasn't. Make sure the block and heads are not warped, if they are you'll need them decked. And if you're doing the work yourself make sure you torq the headbolts properly. Like was said above run the correct sized tap through the head bolts threads to clean them out.

 

Question : How do you change head gaskets in a 1999 dodge neon?
Can any one tell me step by step how to change a head gasket in a 99 dodge neon? The shop said it would cost 800 for the part and labor, so I am trying to find someone else to do it cheaper. and also are the gaskets expensive?

Answer:
the gaskets aren't to expensive but having the head trued back up and tested for cracks is and you also have to replace the head bolts on those cars,the price they gave you wasn't a bad price at all,if you want a step by step ,you need a repair manual or else you,ll mess up and have to do it all over again,there are other shops that will do that one for less,but that price isn't a bad one at all,find an independent shop to do it ,their labor rate is a lot cheaper than other shops are,good luck with it.

 

Question : Does anyone know how much for the cost and labor for repairing blown head gaskets?
I had posted a couple of days ago about my van overheating. (2000 Chevy Venture, 130910- mileage). I took it to the mechanic and the diagnosis is blown head gaskets.( for both) I was wondering what is a reasonable cost for labor and parts.

It doesn't mean your entire engine is toast but on a car that old, it's not worth it.

 

Question : How much would it cost to have the head gaskets replaced on this car?
It's a 1988 Benz. It has around 145K. But it needs new head gaskets. Approximately how much would it cost to have this car fixed? I assume that the heads would need to be resurfaced, etc. Any estimates?

Answer:
Which engine, which model of MBz, and which transmission is your MBz? The V-8 engines would need two head gaskets. Yes, the heads would need to be resurfaced only to achieve a totally flat head surface. Don't you think it might be desireable to do a valve job at the same time while you have the head(s) off? That will require a much larger gasket set. The repair costs should run at least $100 per hour for labor if the work is done in the U.S.A. outside of a MBz Dealer. What are the symptoms of your needing a head gasket? You might want to get a couple of estimates for the work you are talking about.

 

Question : How can you tell if your head gaskets gone?
My brother inlaw has had a look at my motor and in his opinion the head gaskets gone.

Answer:
If the coolant enters the crankcase it mixes with engine oil. Of course oil and water don't mix very well but the presence of ethylene glycol (anti freeze) and the agitation caused by the crankshaft and other moving parts can whip the mixture of coolant and oil into a milkshake. If the coolant is forced out of the exhaust system it is usually heated by the hot exhaust manifold and the rest of the exhaust system. This results in a sweet smelling steam emanating from the tailpipe. The steam is rather persistent, that is it will hover in the air and not dissipate like the normal steam that comes from the combustion process.Testing an automobile engine for a blown head gasket is pretty straightforward. The first check is to see if there are combustion gasses getting into the cooling system. Take a sample of the coolant and go to the local radiator shop and request that they analyze the coolant for the presence of hydrocarbons. If they are present then it is most likely that you have a blown head gasket.Another check is to look at the oil of a warmed up engine. The antifreeze in the oil will whip it up into a frothy brown mixture that looks like a milk shake. If it looks like chocolate mousse then you probably have a blown head gasket.Another check is to fill the cooling system to the brim and remove the radiator cap. Do this when the engine is cool. Start the engine and race it. If there is a compression leak and the gasses are going into the cooling jacket then the gasses will displace the coolant. Since the cap is off the coolant will be pushed out of the radiator. You probably have a blown head gasket.

 

Question : Replacing head gaskets. Any helpful tips I should do since the motor is pulled apart?
I blew the head gaskets in my truck. I have taken the engine apart and removed all old gaskets. I bought an engine kit which includes EVERY gasket for all parts of the motor. Is there any helpful tips I should take into consideration when reinstalling everything? Thank You

Answer:
I would rent a ridge reamer, and remove the ridge left at the top of the cylinder walls by the piston rings. This little trick is well worth the effort in better combustion/gas mileage. The key to replacing gaskets successfully is in cleaning all of the old gasket material from all mating surfaces thoroughly. Being lazy or slacking in this has the miserable reward of having to do it all over again! The next most common mistake to avoid is re-assembly in the wrong order or sequence. It really sucks to discover that you should have done this, before you did that. Take your time; and be careful not to drop any nuts, bolts, or washers. It can cost you hours to retrieve them! Finally, pay attention to bolt tightening sequence and torques. Especially the head bolts. Use a good high quality accurate torque wrench. One that "clicks", not the needle pointer kind. On the water pump, thermostat housing, and valve covers use silicone sealer. It seals best, lasts longer, and is easy to clean and remove. I assume that you will have a valve job done to the heads, or swap them for a pair of reconditioned ones. You should also check the block surfaces with a straight edge to make sure there is no warp-age. If there is, you might as well rebuild the engine. You should check this before you do anything!

My mechanic just told me that I will need to have the head gaskets on my 1993 Toyota 4Runner replaced. What is a ballpark estimate or range of what this may cost me? And yes, before I bought it I made sure that the head gasket recall had been done on it. Here goes the second one....

those trucks run hot , the problem is they have aliuminum heads.they over heat easy. its gonna cost you 800 $ or more .ya i know shit

 

Question : On a 351m 400 ford engine. I am putting the heads back on and the head gaskets are not the same on left?
The head gaskets I have even though you flip flop them they don't look the same for each bank, one side will be the metal rings arounf the gasket, and the other bacnk will be the smoother side. Did I get a kit with two left bank gaskets?

Did you know both heads are exactly the same too? Really.

 

Question : What Makes Cadillac Northstar Head Gaskets Go Out/Go Bad?
what makes caddi northstar notors go bad? i really like caddi sts but i heard the head gaskets go out on them. how does that happen? o and also i have heard that the northstar motors use alotta oil...? whats up with that?

Answer:
these engines are notorious for using oil. in fact, general motors has a bulletin specifically for the northstar using too much oil. there is a 4 hour long piston ring cleaning prodecure using special chemicals sprayed directly into the combustion chamber through the spark plug holes. the problem is the rings get stuck from excess carbon build up and they loose their ability to scrape oil off the wall from the power and intake stroke. the chemicals are designed to loosen up the carbon and allow the rings to do thier job.head gaskets, not so much. but it does happen. mostly with the aluminum block and heads, the heat generated through an overheat concern will warp the surfaces fast. after that, they'll burn coolant quickly and you're stuck! another major concern is the head bolts. when doing a head job on one of these beasts, the threads tear out of the block, and the bad news is that when it happens, you've already got the head on and now you have to tear it down again and put time-serts in all the holes.other than that, a very nice vehicle to own and maintain. they take 7.5 quarts of oil by the way, not 8 like everyone else says. there's another bulletin about the pcv system scavenging 1/2 quart if 8 quarts is used instead of 7.5.
