Editorial Review :

Many newer vehicles are using coil on plug ignition in lieu of traditional coil and ignition wire systems. The spark plug connector spring and boots are starting to fail. Contact springs are corroding and in some cases rusting because of moisture in the S.P. well. Boots are developing cracks and pin holes allowing spark leak and arcing. Until now, the only alternative was to replace the complete coil assembly which could cost you $45-$80 per coil. For example, a 6 cylinder has 6 coils. Sherco Auto Supply is happy to announce the immediate availability of Coil-on-Plug Tune-up Kits that include Spark Plug boots, and contact springs in sets of 4 6 8 & 10 cylinders.

Question : repeated spark plug failure on 1969 mercedes 280 se?
hello everybody.one of my cars is a1969 w108 mercedes with a fuel injected L6 engine.i keep on replacing spark plugs on it after a few minutes of idling...i did replace the ignition coil (bosch blue) by another one(bosch red) from a parts car...may this coil being defective by giving too much voltage, and may this condition lead to repeated spark plug failure(no more spark or completely wet with not even carbon deposit on the tip when taken off for a check)?i took the wire from the coil to the distributor off(on both sides) to perform a compression test(ok on all 6 cyl.),and i was surprised to see a very strong spark arcing from the lead of the coil to one of the terminals on the side of it(and there was a rubber boot on it...)it is the third set of plugs i am wasting and i just don't know what to do...thank you for your attention and have a good day.mike

Answer:
Is this a 6 volt system or a 12 volt system? I had a friend with a similar problem a few years ago. If memory serves me right, he had to order a special plug from NGK that was required for a 6 volt system. I think that might be a good starting point.

Question : Maintenance/minor tuneup on 97 Mercury Sable Station Wagon?
I'm driving to my son's graduation from marine boot camp in SC soon, and don't want any problems with my car. He used to do the maintenance for me and it's been a good while since he did a minor tuneup. I looked at answers for minor tuneup, and I have questions about some things I need to know if they are outdated for my particular car (does my particular car not have these parts). I don't have a lot of money to spare, so I don't want to go in looking really dumb but do want to do what needs doing. The specific terms I read that I need to know if they apply to my car (because most I think don't) are:check/set timingdistributor caprotorsclean or replace PCV valveclean throttle bodyignition coilsignition wirescheck block heaterThanks for any help you can offer me. I do plan to take care of spark plugs, wires, and air filter. And I keep hearing mention of the fuel filter, but I'm told it's hard to get to/expensive, so does that need it before the trip or can it wait?

Answer:
If you haven't done the fuel filter I would go ahead and do it, its very simple and cheap. Also dist. cap and rotor, pvc, and oil. Also if you haven't had the tranny serviced you may think about doing that also.

Question : Chrysler running rough?
I have a 2006 Chrysler Town and Country 3.3l. The check engine light is on and I am getting P2308 error code. The Parts store print out says this is an erratic signal from the ignition coil secondary circuit. The probable causes are: 1.Faulty spark plug or coil boot or 2.Failed ignition coil. The van is running rough, Has a rough idle, Hesitation, Sputtering, Excessive engine vibration.I replaced the spark plug wires a month ago. I replaced the coil and the spark plugs today. The van is still running rough any suggestions?

Answer:
Well, my #2 plug kept going out on me in my Dodge Neon because of a fuel pump issue. I have a very good friend who's a mechanic, and he said that normally the problems with spark plugs come from: too much fuel, not enough fuel, too much electricity, not enough electricity. My fuel pump wasn't putting out enough fuel and I had to replace it. Take it in to a shop and have somebody check it out for you.
