Questions & Answers
Question : Why is my 1988 Chevy Cavalier getting horrible gas mileage?
I have a 1988 Chevy Cavalier and am having trouble with the gas mileage. When I got the car a few months back it would get about 30 miles per gallon. Then one day the car began to idle really fast when it started and the gas mileage went down to about 20 miles per gallon. Changed the computer and the car stopped the fast idle but now it only gets about 10-12 miles per gallon. In no certain order I have changed the map sensor, throttle control sensor, Idle control sensor, heat and cool sensors, new spark plugs, new fuel filter, and new fuel pump. Someone told me if the catalytic converter was stopped up that could cause poor fuel economy but I had it tested by a mechanic and was told it was fine. Does anyone know what the problem could be? Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! The parts I changed weren't all to try to fix the gas mileage problem. At first I was just trying to fix the fast idle. The car has 53000 miles on it. It is fuel injected. It has a 2.0 liter 4 cylinder automatic. There are no new noises from the engine. I ran a diagnostic test and get a code 42 which is Electronic Spark Timing or Bypass fault. Engine oil has just been changed 152 miles ago. There is no residue on the dipstick.

Answer:
Check the fuel pressure and if possible hook up a scanner to the computer and read the O2 sensor to see if it is running rich. Could be worn injectors.

Question : Is the Electronic Spark Control a module or a sensor and how do I replace it?
On 95 Chevy Lumina computer diagnostic reads 43 (ESC) code Advanced Auto parts is confused as to whether this is a module or sensor? And where on this engine is it located?

Answer:
There are at least 2 components. There is the crankshaft position sensor and the camshaft position sensor. Crankshaft position sensor is right by the crankshaft (look for the harmonic balancer), should be the only thing there with a wire coming out of it. Camshaft position sensor is located at either end of one of the heads, again just look for a thing with a wire.

Question : Could it be the pick up coil?
Vehicle is a 91 Chevy S10 Blazer with a 4.3L V6. Engine idles alright, but hesitates badly. Replaced ignition module, coolant sensor, throttle position sensor, and idle air control valve. When i was replacing the ignition module, the inside of the distributor looked kind of crusty, and the pick up coil wires looked to be cracked in several places. Before the igniton module replacement, i found a code 42 which means spark control. I know the pick up coil connects to the ignition module. Could the pickup coil set the code? Also replaced oxygen sensor too.also replaced the ignition coil

Answer:
NEVER replace a part till you know the problem. Code 42 is spark timing circuit code 43 is spark cobtrol circuit. All that wasted effort when it appears your problem is in the distributor. Without being there, and using your description, I would say a new pickup coil, possibly a new reluctor, new dist. cap, new rotor, a good cleaning and that should solve the problem Any time you have cracked ignition parts you have a problem. Be sure to clear your codes when repairs are done.

Question : Is Electronic Spark Control a module or sensor prob and how do I replace it?
On 95 Chev Lumina computer diagnostic reads code 43 where is this module or sensor located on engine and how do I replace?

Answer:
What size engine? The v6 had distributorless ignition if I remember correcty.and there should be coil packs either under the front exhaust manifold or on top of engine near the firewall. The module is what the coil packs are mounted too. The E.S.C System consists of a few components one being the knock sensor. Get yourself a repair manual or find a trusted independent repair shop. Stay clear of quick lube shops.

Question : location of electronic spark control sensor on a 1991 Buick Regal 3800 v6?
Need the physical locationOtherwise known as a knock sensor. Where on the car engine is it located?

Answer:
It's on the cylinder head closest to the firewall, below the exhaust manifold, about a third of the way back from the front of the engine.Easiest way to get to it is from underneath the car.

Question : Why does my 2002 dodge neon die when I stop?
It is an automatic and when I drive and make a stop it idles low and dies, it does it expecially if the ac is on, I can have it in park and rev the engine and it still happens but if I'm driving its good there is no problem its only when I slow down and stop, I've changed alternator, speed sensors, idle control valve spark plugs, air filter

Answer:
Try changing the fuel filter

Question : From where does the Ignition control module on a 95 Grand Prix get power?
My car will turn over but will not start. Checked for spark from coils, none was present. Checked for power at the plug of the Ignition control module. also no power with key on. Have changed both crankshaft position sensors and ignition control module.

Answer:
After the crank and cam sensors pick up a signal and send it to the ECM, the ECM follows with injector pulse and power to the ignition control module. One of the other things that can cause this no start condition is a faulty oil pressure sender. If the ECM is not getting a signal from the oil pressure sender, it will prevent the vehicle from starting. This is designed ao that if you have no oil pressure, you also have no ignition, no injectors, and no fuel pump, to prevent you from locking up your engine.

Question : Location of electronic spark control sensor or a knock sensor on a 1991 Buick Regal 3800 v6?
Need to know where on engine it is located.

Answer:
Look on the cylinder head closest to the firewall. It sits below the manifold, about a third of the way back from the front of the engine. Best way I ever found to get to them is from underneath the car, and even then, it's not much fun...Whatever you do, don't try to use a crescent (adjustable) wrench to take it out. All you'll do is break it, and pay someone else to fix your goof.Been there, done that, got the t-shirt...

Question : Mitsubishi mighty max 1990 4 cyl. what control the fuel injecter to squart gas?
Where are the sensors on the motor that Control the injectors the fuel pressure is good . and i have spark on all the plugs. just not getting fuel. it will crank all day long , but you never smell gas.

Answer:
the ecm controls the fuel injectors. a noid light set will show you if you have fuel injector pulse or not. the most responsible sensor would be the crankshaft position sensor, if that goes out you'll lose fuel injector pulse

Question : I Have A 1995 Chevy Blazer S10 4.3 Vortec 2door 4WD?
After I Replaced/ Computer/Starter/Ignition Control Sensor/Spark Plugs/Fuel Filter/ Ignition Wires Set/ Battery Still Won't Start.... Well To Be Honest With Yall I Did Run For One Week But It Die on me several times but still start until the last time i drove crossing the rail road tracks it just died completely and after then i replaced the ignition wires after 5 or 8 times that i tried to start it .. It Blow Out The Muffler When I Try To Start It You Can Only Smell Fuel But Dont Start ... It Spark Of Course But Won't Start ................ Someone Please Help Help Help Please I Spent Over $500 Dollars Just On Parts.. i Also Checked The Fuel Pressure By The Ignition Wires connection And It Shows Alot Pressure Took One Spark Plug Out And Came out With Some Oil What Is It ? Help Please Thanks

Answer:
Diagnosing things properly the first time saves a lot of money and frustration. It sounds as if you might have a bad fuel leak inside the motor from the CPI. If you have replaced all of this stuff and it is all checking good still and there are no codes in the system, take the intake plenum off. What you are looking at should be an injector with six plastic pipes and a fuel pressure regulator. When you said you had lots of pressure, did the pressure leak down quickly? If it leaks down quickly and the plenum is off, you will see a pool of gas on one side or the other. Or if one side of the interior of the intake is clean and the other is filthy, the CPI is leaking. You have to replace the whole deal.
