Questions & Answers
Question : 2004 Saturn L300 Starting/Battery Problems?
I left my iPOD charger/FM transmitter plugged into the cig lighter for about 10min while the car was turned off, came back out and the car wouldnt start. Took it to the mechanic, battery, alternator and started tested OK. Used the iPOD charger again yesterday, unplugged it b-4 turning the car off, came back out 10-15 min later, would not start. Took it to Advanced Auto Parts for testing, all results OK but it said that the "Starter AMP draw is low w/ OK starter voltage. Check starter circuit for loose worn or corroded wiring". My cig lighter is "testy" and if you bump whatever is plugged into it, it comes unplugged a little and shuts off whatever is charging, could this cause a short in the electrical to cause these problems???

Answer:
It is possible that IPOD is not problem! It is also possible that charging system is good! But several problems are possible here!First of all though problematic, I don't think lighter socket is bad! If it was shorting, - it would cause a fuse to blow, or a wire to burn off, -- in either case, next time you tried to use it --- it would be dead! Now the "low starter amp" is possibly stated wrong here! Did they say that the amp availability for starter was low?? If batery can not supply enough amps (and is proper size battery to begin with)-- IE you have a 550 amp battery, but it is only putting out 300 amps! Then you battery is getting in critical condition! And possibly the 15 minutes of draw from lighter socket might put it low enough that it can't crank engine anymore! If so, then you will get the same effect from leaving key on , leaving headlights on- quick discharge- (if they will stay on with key off)- or even leaving doors open so courtesy lights run (but will take a little longer, as they don't draw much)!Bad connection problems generally show up in different ways, - but nothing is impossible, - so I would pull off battery connectors, and soak each one "underwater" in a cup of water with baking soda in it (about a teaspoon full), as long as water bubbles, there is corrosion (oxidation) on terminals, when water remains non bubbly for about 30 seconds or so terminal in now clean! Acid from battery contacting copper wires etc causes greenish fuzzy stuff, -- this makes for bad connections! Now they should have done a AMP test on battery when checking system, as well as output voltage/current test on alternator! You can get this done at AutoZone and lots of auto parts supply stores, as well as WalMart. Be aware though that they might want to sell you a battery, (as that is what they do for a living), - if in doubt get it checked in several places, for "second opinions"-- Most do it for free!

Question : how much do you think this car is worth?
1994 Buick Lesabre Limited.New valve covers, alternator, starter, spark plugs & wires, 2 new front tires (back are still new), thermosat, headlights & bulbs and a new battery. Answer:
Sorry, system doesn't count. Sell the stereo or sell the car. The car: check out KBB.com. Add on what you think to that for the system. You will not get everything back.

Question : Why is my battery dying in my 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
I have a 1995 Jeep grand Cherokee.I have got the battery tested, alternator, both good. I have redid all of the connection on the battyer, starter, alternator, and body and engine ground. The neg battery had a little dust in it but I do not think that is the problem. With the neg cable off the battery I tested the draw with a multimeter and it read 8.70 amps.I started disconnecting the fuses in my fuse block under the hood, and when I pulled the 50 amp fuse block fuse the amps started dropping to about 7.80 and then started leveling off. Then when I take the multimeter off and reconnect it, the amps are back to 8.70. The same thing happens with the I.O.D. 20 amp fuse.My alternator gauge started reading about 12 amps about 3 weeks ago.My car started dying about 2 weeks ago.My ABS light on the dash came on about 2 weeks ago.My alternator is pushing out about 14 amps at the battery. If I turn my car off after driving for 30 minutes it wont start back up right after. If I charge my battery all the way up it will last for like 5 hours with a couple of starts. Please help me, I can not figure it out. I will greatly appreciate itWhat should my next steps be?What are those fuses to?Thanks

Answer:
There is a problem with the charging circuit, somewhere.Have the battery retested.Check all wiring to and from battery and alternator, looking for bad grounds, breaks, bad insulation. If ok, replace the diode pack in the alternator.

Question : 2000rms Alternator for a 04 Explorer?
I have a 04 explorer 2wd and i just ordered 2 kicker l7s and a 2000rms hifonics amp i also just purchased 1 guage wire to wire all this and i have a cap and a distribution block. I was told i will need a alternator and Battery so i am getting a 180$ redtop that has the same specs as a yellow top and i was wondering how important it is to get a alternator? Like can i wait a while to get it or should i get one right away and will this one be good http://www.db-starter-alternator.com/Items/7773-200%20amp%20explorer?&caSKU=7773-200%20amp%20explore r&caTitle=EXPLORER%204.6%20L%20HIGH%20AMP%20OUTPUT%20ALTERNATOR%2002%2003%2004%2005%20%207773 or does anyone have any suggestions on alternators for a explorer because i dont know a thing about my power stuff so please explain!ITS SPARKYYYY!!!!!!

Answer:
That or a 250 ampere will be fine.Waiting depends on how bad you want the system to hit the ground running. If you don't bang it at all, you can wait.

Question : How much might all these parts be for?
I have a bunch of parts for a late 70's mopar vehicle, just wondering if anyone might know what they would be worth all togetherTransfer case2 70 amp alternators2 starter motors2 Front driveshaftsClutch plateFront sway bar8 spark plugs2 camshaftsassorted interior lights/plastic bits.brand new fuseboxAll but the fusebox have been lightly used, but far from destroyed. Thanks in advance.

Answer:
I would say there worth as much as the buyer is willing to give. If you have a local craigslist, advertise them on there for best offer. Other than that, it might take a while to part all of that out.

Question : Could an alternator effect glow plugs heating up enough?
So I have a 1981 Oldsmobile 98 Regency with a 350 v8 Diesel. Since I bought it every morning I have had to use starter fluid in the carb to start it. Well the other day I came outside car was completely dead and replaced battery and next morning dead again. So I got the alternator checked and I am replacing it because it had 0 amps to it. So now I am wondering if a low amp alternator could have been the problem that the glow plugs wouldn't warm up enough to start the car without starter fluid.

Question : How can you tell when you need a new car battery before it's too late?
My car isn't showing any problems of any kind yet, but I do know that it's been at least eight years ago since I bought the battery. I live in a very rural area with neighbors one mile away in both directions, so I cannot afford to wake up one morning for work this winter and find out the battery has died overnight. I have already replaced the starter and 124 amp alternator within the last six months. The battery is a DuraLast Gold bought from AutoZone eight years ago. I'm trying to eliminate problems before they have a chance to surface. Your help will be greatly appreciated and thank you in advance.

Answer:
No, the lifespan of a battery is about 5 years. Chances are yours needs replacing. you can have it load tested at a local garage.

Question : Is my Alternator screwed??? Battery at 12.3 V - Rated at 410 A. Alternator is at 10.9 V, 0.0 Amps?

Or is it screwed. It doesn't really matter, but before I install a new one that I just got, tell me if the "World Wide" 70 Amp alternator is good, or a bad brand. THANKS!!

Answer:
Suggest if the engine was running at the time the alternator is not producing.

Question : My alternator is draining my battery when the car is off.?
I have a custom built 240 amp alternator and it drains my battery after a few hours. It took me a week to find out that it was the alternator doing it, I did not know this could happen. I have a 1992 Buick Roadmaster. Now I took the alternator back to the shop that built it and he tested it and said it was good. Now I put it to my own personal test and I know it’s bad. What I want to know is how I should prove to the guys at the shop that it is bad. I have four wires going to my battery on the hot side, the wire from the alternator, starter, the sound system and the one that powers all the things in the car. So I tested each wire one at a time to see where the drain is coming from over a 2 hour time period. And the only one that causes a drain is the alternator wire. But the guy at the shop says it test good. So how can I prove this to him? Aside from that it works perfect, charges well and put out the correct amount of volts.

Answer:
use some Ohm-meter or digital multimeter and measure DC resistance of it. If it has lower than 500-1000Ohm, it is gonna drain your battery after time.

Question : Is there a good 200 amp alternator for S-10 4 Cyl?
How is the reliability of DB Electrical-Starters-Alternators, they have a listing on eBay. They are one of the few that claim they can make a 200 amp alternator for 2000 Chevy S-10 4 Cyl. If anyone knows of any other site that has an alternator this size pleases let me know. Also, adding a sound system that requires 80amps. Is this the way to go?

Answer:
try this site, they might be able to help youwww.eletrodyne.com brushless alternators
